Travel Hockey
What is Travel Hockey?
The CCJHA Portage Lake Flyers AA/A hockey program places more emphasis on competition than the house league program. There is continued stressing of the philosophy of enhanced skill development. Some associations refer to these programs as their “competitive” league.
These teams play an average of 40 to 60 games per year. Games are played locally with U.P. associations, as well as weekend travel throughout WI, MN, and lower Michigan.
Tryout Information
To increase opportunities for player development, the 2025-2026 season tryouts will take place during June and July. We are making this earlier shift to increase the opportunities for potential A teams within our organization, with the following caveats:
- The age division must meet our handbook guidelines of a minimum of two house teams with a minimum number of players per team; and
- There is a genuine interest in players and families dedicated to an additional travel team.
Tryout Fees
The cost per player is $60, which covers all three sessions. The cost is the same regardless of how many skates the player attends.

All tryouts will be at Michigan Tech's John Macinnes Student Ice Arena.
10U (2015-2016)
June 24, 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm

12U (2013-2014)
June 12, 6:00 pm to 7:20 pm
June 15, 6:00 pm to 7:20 pm
July 1, 5:00 pm to 6:20 pm
14U (2011-2012)
June 12, 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
June 15, 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
July 1, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Requirements
Players must have a valid USA Hockey 2025-2026 registration to be eligible for tryouts.
Players must be registered in advance to participate. There is no registration at the door.
If your player(s) are interested in participating in a travel program, it is strongly recommended that you attend all tryout sessions. All players must attend at least one tryout session to be eligible for travel hockey. If a player is unable to attend, parents are encouraged to speak with the division head coach.
If numbers warrant, both the AA and A teams will be evaluated during the same sessions. There will not be a separate tryout held later in the summer. If there are not enough players trying out to warrant both an AA and A team, we will have one AA team in that age division.

Registration is open for tryouts for the Portage Lake Flyers 2025-2026 season. You must have a USA Hockey number for the 2025-2026 season to register. If you have questions, please contact the Travel Committee Coordinator.
